Owl Fest was held at Rice Stadium last Saturday. The event is designed to meet the players of this Fall’s collegiate sports: volleyball, soccer, cross country, and football, plus cheerleading. Although I did not get any autographs, I did get a chance to speak to some of the college athletes and I feel a palpable energy in these teams as they come out of about 18 months of lockdowns.
As we all mingled in the stadium concourse, a football scrimmage raged below on the field. Head coach Mike Bloomgren said that he felt very satisfied with the progress his team has shown. This was the first usage of the University’s new Astrotuff field. The volleyball team also joined us for autographs while earlier in the day they pounced on Texas State in an exhibition game. We even had free beer, courtesy of Karbach Brewing.
Classes start next week at Rice University. Fall athletics is going full tilt.
