March 5, 2020 – After months of fear, preparations and cancellations, the new coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, has officially come to the Houston area.
The news was announced Wednesday afternoon when a Fort Bend man in his 70s was “presumptively confirmed” to have the deadly disease by a city of Houston laboratory. Although 13 coronavirus cases had been transferred from foreign countries to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, this is the first in Texas not to be imported to the state.
As of March 5, the disease, which resembles pneumonia and originated in China in late December, has infected more than 90,000 people, killed 3,000+ in 65 countries and seen more than 150 patients be treated for the disease in 16 U.S. states, 11 of whom have died.
