The Rice University Owls engaged Southern Mississippi on Saturday at Rice Stadium. Rice tried their best but came up short, losing 20 – 6. Everyone was there, students, professors, and the oil business. Shout out to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
I have to say, I thought that Southern Mississippi played some of the worse football that I have seen in a long time. Lots of mistakes, particularly the quarterback missing players that were wide open. Nevertheless, Rice never really took advantage of the opportunity. At halftime it was Southern Mississippi 10 and Rice “The Null Set”.
I have to give Rice some credit; however, their conference is TOUGH. Every game when I am down on the field, all I hear is POW, POP, CRACK. The other teams can really utilize their forearms, especially on defense. A lady that was like my mother, when I was a child, used to say, “Play Pretty”, when I hung out with her kids. I do not think that you can play pretty in this conference.
I hesitate to say this, but I think Rice might be missing depth on their roster. Every game where you get a new “stand out”, suddenly he is on the injured list. Rice has a lot of injuries, and their starting line up seems to fluctuate constantly.
Late in the 4th quarter, the score was Rice 6 and Southern Mississippi 13. Looked like Rice might tie the game, after a missed extra point kick. But, then Southern Mississippi scored a touchdown in the final minutes, and that was the end.
I did not run into anyone at this game that could share some new information on the engineering business. Rice is having their Global E&C Forum on Engineering and Construction, Nov. 11 – 12, 2019. I will pass along any news I hear. The next Rice game at home is with Marshall on Nov. 2, 2019.
