The valve Manufacturers Association of American held its Valve Basics Seminar and Exhibition in Houston, Texas at the Sheraton Houston Brookhollow Hotel, October 18 – 20, 2016. The purpose of the conference truly is to educate. The scope of the seminar is broad, covering a very wide range of topics: from hand valves, to control valves, actuators, solenoid valves, and safety valves. The exhibition is just as interesting. Companies covering the entire spectrum of industrial valves had a booth at the exhibition (check out slide show). Companies that produce valve packing and 3-D printing even attended.
The thing that really caught my eye is the seminar on check valves. As a chemical engineering, specializing in process design, I never really thought much about check valves. It turns out that they should be considered an engineered item. Most folks see them as off the shelf items but they are not. Proper line sizing and pressure profiles are required to make this sensitive piece of equipment work properly.
